As you may know, CIAT, ICARDA, ILRI and WorldFish have received positive feedback – and
some critical comments – from the CGIAR Consortium on their proposed Livestock Fish research program (livestock-fish.wikispaces.com)
The drafting team of the revised proposal URGENTLY need your help to respond to some of the critical questions raised by the reviewers.
The first question addresses a fundamental hypothesis underlying the proposal:
Can we really expect livestock and fish production ‘by the poor’ to contribute meaningfully to nutrition ‘for the poor’?
Take a look at our blog – where all the various documents are linked – and share your views on the question we pose !
MANY thanks in advance
Between now and the end of February 2011 FAO have requested the NGO ‘Vetwork’ to examine how cash transfers and voucher schemes have been used in emergencies that affect livestock owning communities (that almost all emergencies!). We believe there is a growing body of evidence on what constitutes good practice to be obtained from the direct experience of supporting livestock owners through their livestock assets and indirectly from work in other sectors, for example human health, nutrition, water and shelter.
The results of this work will be:
1. A peer reviewed position paper
2. Recommendations on how the information in the position paper might be utilised by the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) project. LEGS will soon become a companion module to Sphere.
The review will include key informant interviews, literature review and site visits (if practical). If you have an interest in this area or reports on the use of cash transfers and vouchers – even in non livestock related projects. I would be grateful if you could get in touch with me.
Best regards
Tim

Dear All,
At FAO we are in the process of examining the livestock, gender and food security issues and we are looking for photographs that show women in participating in every part of the livestock value chain.
Should you have photographs that you would be prepared to share with us, we would be very grateful if you could send them to the following address: Frauke.Kramer@fao.org
Thank you in advance for your collaboration.
Kind regards,
Frauke
Dear Members,
Could someone give me good examples (apart from dairy) where livestock marketing groups have been set up in developing countries which have been sustainable? I'm going to the Sudan and one of the project activities is the establishment of these groups. In my experience, I have rarely seen any groups which have effectively maintained group marketing activities beyond the duration of the project. Any adherence to the group is a function of economic returns to members and marketing as a group doesn't necessary lead to this.
Please help me out! 40 years of development experience and this is always touted as a solution!
WHERE DOES IT WORK AND WHY?
I would really appreciate some assistance here. For example, a question for the Cambodia livestock production project, are those pig marketing groups functioning?
Thanks,
Nancy (Nancy.Morgan@fao.org)
Dear Friends,
We have been involved in efforts to preserve and promote indigenous (heritage breeds) poultry for over 15 years. We have been successful with four of the most sturdy, time and climate-tested four breeds out of a total of seventeen such indigenous breeds in the country. We believe that the main reason for our success is that all our efforts are centred around small farmers who have had a tradition of keeping such birds. We have tied up with several farmers for the supply of best-quality breeders and chicks in the surrounding areas. We also enable farmers with breed selection, breed improvement, production of feeds and supplements, disease-prevention and treatment with herbal and home remedies.
Is there someone out there who is involved in similar mission and interested to collaborate?
We would be happy to collaborate and share our experiences with individuals and organisations that are committed to the promotion of indigenous breeds.

Thank you,

This is very good work; preserving heritage poultry breeds. I am one of those interested in preserving but at the same time amplifying production of and from heritage poultry breeds. We have however, not started yet and it will be an honour to receive methodologies you have used so far and reports on results obtained so far. We can always link up in joint multi or bilateral country research on this one.
"I am seeking reports or studies on restocking in South Sudan, especially the states of Upper Nile (Luakpiny/Nasir, Ulang), Warrap (Twic, Gogrial West, Gogrial East), and Northern Bahr el Gazhl (Aweil North, South and West counties).
I am interested in all information about restocking, but especially with goats or chickens, or with women's involvement."
