On Line Discussion on Livestock Keepers Rights 

-          Do we pursue global food security better by supporting smallholder farmers, agro-pastoralists and pastoralists or commercial producers?

-          How can we make sure Livestock Keepers rights become a general broadly accepted principle?

The Community of Practice for Pro-poor Livestock Development and the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition from 8 March to 6 April 2010 have launched a discussion on these and other questions related to the future of Livestock keepers.

Participants discussed the role of small-scale livestock producers and pastoralists in ensuring food security and if and how this sector should be protected against an expansion of intensive industrial livestock keeping.

Members explored the particular circumstances in marginal lands, where traditional livestock keeping constitutes one of the only livelihood options. Further, the discussion focused on how a right’s based approach could benefit livestock keepers.
