There is no doubt that coffee is the most consumed beverage in the world. It’s always a pleasure to chat over a good old cup of coffee. However, when you see all the factors to consider when choosing the right coffee, it can be quite dizzying. That said, to give you a helping hand, here are some criteria that will allow you to choose the right variety of coffee, much to the delight of your loved ones.

The two main species of coffee: Arabica and Canephora

This is the first criterion to consider before putting coffee in a quality bean coffee maker. Indeed, Arabica and Canephora are the two main species of coffee. The most well-known and widespread variety of Canephora is Robusta, which is more bitter and full-bodied. As for the second species, Arabica, it is milder, fragrant, and has less caffeine.

After harvesting, the method of processing coffee varies from country to country. This process is commonly referred to as the “process.” That said, there is the wet method, semi-wet method, and the dry method… Consequently, the coffee aromas obtained in the end vary from one method to another.

Arabica comes in several types (about 200 varieties which are classified into subspecies. These subspecies are divided into variants). An Ethiopian coffee, for example, is more vibrant, fruity, and floral. On the other hand, coffees from America and Colombia are sweet, smooth with fruity notes, and have gourmet or chocolate aromas.

The type of coffee roasting

First, roasting is the beginning of calcination over an open flame, which is applied to coffee beans. The choice of coffee also depends on the type of this process. This is a very essential point as it reveals the aromas of the various types of coffee. Thus, there are different types of roasting.

Light roasting: this process is dedicated to filter coffee. It brings more liveliness.

Medium roasting: at the end of this process, you get a coffee with less liveliness. The aroma, however, is more “accessible” with smoother flavors. Basically, everything you need to brew a good espresso.

Dark and very dark roasting: in this category, the coffee beans cook longer. This results in chocolate notes, more bitterness, and less liveliness. Floral aromas are also muted.

The grind of the coffee: very important!

This is simply the transformation of coffee beans into powder. This is usually done through a grinder. For everything to be perfect, you must choose the grind size according to the coffee preparation method.

You are probably wondering why this is important? It’s very simple, the choice of grind affects the aroma and taste of the coffee you wish to reveal. For example, fine and very fine grinds are excellent for espresso, Italian coffee, or Turkish coffee.
